While many items won’t have monetary value, it doesn’t mean they’re worthless. Frequently, others can put quality pieces to good use. "[Encourage] loved ones to find a home for the things, rather than sell the things," says Cohen. "Say, 'Hey, wouldn’t it be more satisfying to give it to another family so you know it’s being used?' Make it their decision."
For heirlooms and extra-special items, this can turn into a particularly special moment. "Pick those few things you want
to have in your family, and give them while you’re alive," says Buysse,
"when you can appreciate the joy in giving, and when the other person
can appreciate having it."
Clare D. found this tactic put her mom’s mind at ease. "Because of what her real needs were going to be in this smaller space, many people benefited from so many of the things she had accumulated."
