BTW, if you're having any trouble reading here b/c of the font size, just click on the font size button, to the top-right of the page (the orange one with aA on it). Meanwhile I want to add that I know that "what-the-GC (grandchildren)-call-me/us" can become even a more serious issue if the GC live with you or you take daily care of them, etc. Some custodial GPs even face the issue of the GC starting to call them "Mom" and "Dad." Especially if the parents can't/won't come to visit. ... That's one of the more difficult subjects we often find ourselves discussing in Grandparents Caring for Grandkids. Another is what to tell the GC when they ask WHY mom or dad isn't there. But we also enjoy some lighter and more heart-warming topics, such as fun outings with the GC or cute/clever/moving remarks they've made. Really, we talk about everything to do with the caregiver experience. After all, we're a support group for frequent and fulltime GP (and other relative) caregivers. So if you're raising your GC , helping to raise them or acting as "nanny granny" (or "grampy," etc.) while the parents work, go to school and so on, I'd love to have you come and join us. (Former and soon-to-be such caregivers are welcome, too.) I think you'll find we're a very warm, helpful, compassionate bunch of people. Hey, our group motto is the old saying, "Walk a mile in my shoes." You can find us by clicking on Community (above) and then Grandparenting. (But note the temporary problem that I mentioned in my other post, below.) Looking forward to meeting you! :-)
What a delightful list! Of course, it doesn't surprise me that some of these celebrities have unusual or unique GP names. But what amazes me is the growing variety in GP names among us "ordinary folk!" :-) Years ago, all I knew of were the few variations of "Grandma and Grandpa," plus "Nana and Papa" (or "Nanny and Poppy") and a few ethnic versions. Nowadays, I hear many new GM (grandmother) names, such as Mimi, Mommom and Lovey to name a few. And some new GF (grandfather) ones, also, such as Papaw and Pop-Pop. I've also learned more ethnic GP names, especially here online. And I hear more and more stories about GPs who have just accepted - and come to love - whatever name their grands have come up with!
For the most part, this is a fun, light-hearted topic. That is, unless and until it becomes a bone of contention between the GPs and the parents. If a GP is lobbying for a name that the parents don't like or the parents have "assigned" a GP a name that the GP doesn't feel comfortable with, that can create a lot of tension. Nor is it unusual for such seemingly small, innocuous issues to turn into major conflicts if parents and GPs aren't careful.
At Mothers-in-Law Anonymous, right here on GP.com, we often discuss such excellerating problems, as well as those inlaw/family issues that were huge from the start and those that are easily solved. No such problem is "too big" or "too small" for us to give it our attention. We're a lively mix of MsIL (mothers-in-law) and DsIL (daughters-in-law) , along with some others, who explore the ins and outs, ups and downs of MIL/DIL (and similar) relations. If you're having a MIL/DIL problem or the like or if you're simply interested in this popular topic, please come and join us! Since we enjoy members with a broad range of opinions and styles (from blunt to sensitive), you're almost bound to find some likeminded people and gain some fresh perspectives, a the same time. You can find us by clicking on Community (above) and the Family Matters. (As of this posting, 9/9/12 at 12:32 PM, EST, that and some of the other sections of the site are temporarily out-of-service. But if you can't get in, please try again later.) Hope you come and talk with us soon!
