Busch Gardens in Florida is home to an unlikely friendship between Kasi, a cheetah, and Mtani, a golden Labrador retriever. Both were orphaned, and zoo personnel saw an opportunity to see if the similarities between the species – disposition, social structure, and length of life – might be stronger than their differences. The result was a beautiful friendship. “The thing that surprises me most is how they seem to need one another,” says Tim Smith, who works with the unusual pair. “These two have a shot at being companions to one another for the rest of their lives. And they seem to be making that choice.”
