In my previous post, I had asked if it was ethical for me to take business away from my employer and I mistakenly said "Probably" and it should have said "Probably Not".

I'm not sure where you've gotten these price estimates from, but they're outrageous!! If I charged anywhere near these prices I would understandably never be called again!! I use to work for an electrical contractor about twenty years ago and I would be working at a owners home and the neighbor's would see the name on the side of the van and they would stop me whenever I went out to the truck for something. The majority of those who stopped me were elderly people asking me what it would cost to install a new outlet. Even back then the prices contractor's charged were high(but not as high as those in the article) and it would break my heart to give them an estimate. So what I would do was to tell them that I would be back after work and put in the new outlet for practically nothing. I looked at them like they were my grandparents. Ethically was I right in doing that, taking business away from my employer? Probably, but how could I justify charging someone elderly who most likely were living on Social Security the going prices? it used to be $45 just to get me out there and if all they wanted was for me to replace a switch or outlet, I'd still have to charge that plus the cost of the switch and whatever time it took me. It might total $60, just for changing a device!! To me that was criminal!!!
