If a walking tour is only as good as its tour guide, you’re in good hands with Emperor Norton, who leads two walks—one through Union Square, and the other along the waterfront—in the City by the Bay. Dressed in colorful regalia, Norton talks you through a multitude of local attractions (Maiden Lane, The Palace Hotel, etc.) and 150 years of San Francisco history, including the great earthquake of 1906 and the story of Bummer and Lazarus, a pair of celebrity stray dogs beloved throughout the 1860s and eulogized by Mark Twain.
Of course the main attraction is Norton himself, an immensely knowledgeable and colorful character who leads the jaunts in a feathered top hat. Tours happen on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Book now for tickets.
