Baby on Board
by Lambeth Hochwald
We’re sure it's been a while since you last cruised around town with a baby in tow. Not to worry. Chances are, your little traveler will be pleased as punch just watching the scenery go by. Here are tips to keep you, as driver, smiling, too.
Make sure the baby’s parents give you a quick 1,2, 3 on how to properly place the baby into and lift her out of the car seat. You’ll be glad you had the primer: LATCH (Lower Anchor and Tethers for Children) technology can be as complicated as a Houdini trick.
Gear Up
Invest in a Baby in Sight Back Seat Infant Mirror ($13). This inexpensive, wide-angle plastic mirror allows you to keep an eye on your grandbaby’s every move ... without having to whip your head around or readjust the rearview mirror.
Hands on the Wheel
Keep the grabbing for fallen books and stuffed animals to a minimum -- unless Grandpa or another adults are in the car with you. If you hand your grandchild a book, you risk him dropping it with a distracting shriek. This could create a hazardous situation while you’re navigating rush-hour traffic.
Take breaks along the way
Be prepared to stop often. Most infants can only stay entertained for short periods of time. If your grandchild grows restless or cranky, stop to retrieve that bottle or the snack you wisely stashed in your bag for precisely that moment.
