From that first smile to the first tiny tooth, a baby's first months are measured in milestones. The following slides will give you a rough idea of what to expect in the months ahead. Keep in mind, though, that no two babies develop exactly the same way, and that the experts recognize a wide range of "normal" ages for arriving at each new milestone. "While some speed past each stage, others may need a bit more encouragement," says pediatrician Tanya Remer Altmann, the author of Mommy Calls: Dr. Tanya Answers Parents' Top 101 Questions About Babies and Toddlers (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2008). If you have concerns about your grandchild's development, she says, suggest that parents call it to their pediatrician's attention.
