With a house and a car and a good job as a truck driver, Karon Ervin lived a comfortable life in Iowa Park, Texas. But when her daughter realized she was unable to care for her own kids, Karon gave up her own security to provide a stable home to her grandchildren, Marni, now 4, and Hayden, 2.
Giving up her career to care for her grandkids 24/7 meant more than just a loss of income, explains ex-husband James Ervin, who nominated Karon in Grandparents.com's Extraordinary Grandparents Contest. She eventually lost her house as well. But despite the hardships, James wrote to us, the children don't go without, and Karon makes sure they don't have to give up the things they love, like Marni's dance class.
As so many grandparents across the nation have done, Karon has sacrificed her own financial security and creature comforts to build a better life for her grandchildren, and that makes her a truly extraordinary grandparent.
