Books That Bring the Past to Life

Our book columnist, Sloane Tanen, is a painter and the author of children's books including Where Is Coco Going?, Coco All Year Round, and Appetite for Detention. Her latest book is the young-adult novel Are You Going to Kiss Me Now?

Children live in the moment, so introducing them to the past can be a challenge. What's happening on TV, in the schoolyard, or in their backyard is generally more compelling than what happened 60 years ago. Sloane Tanen is the author of eight books including the best-selling Bitter With Baggage Seeks Same: The Life and Times of Some Chickens, Going for the Bronze, Hatched: The Pig Push From Pregnancy to Motherhood, and the children’s titles Where is Coco Going, Coco All Year Round, C is for Coco, Coco Counts, the young-adult picture book Appetite for Detention, and the new young-adult novel, Are You Going to Kiss Me Now?. Sloane is a painter whose work has been exhibited in a number of shows and can be found in private and corporate collections. She received a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and holds graduate degrees in literary theory from NYU and in art history from Columbia University. She lives in Berkeley, Calif., with her husband and two sons.
