A hybrid of comic book and novel, Wimpy Kid is a hilarious tale of middle school angst.

If you’d like your tween to slip in a novel or two between reading text messages, then Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney might be the answer. This half-novel, half-comic book follows an appropriately nerdy yet sometimes rebellious Greg Heffley as he navigates embarrassing school plays, stinky-cheese touch (the tragic social condition that results from touching the piece of cheese that’s been rotting on the basketball court blacktop since last year), and all kinds of other sixth-grade drama. Greg tells his story through his diary, which, he is quick to point out, really isn’t a diary but rather a journal, and that his mom just made a mistake when she bought it. The always kid-friendly and never-condescending tone of this novel makes it an easy one to get sucked into. And if that’s not enough, the hilariously simple cartoons dotted throughout the narrative will seal the deal.

My daughter, aged 9, just got this book and loves it. It's the first book she has been reading non-stop since she bought it. She's also read some to me, and I have to agree with the review - it's great!
