Avi releases a new series of half-fictional literary adventures.
Surly dragons, talking cats, adolescent wizards: You’ll find none of these in the new I Witness books from veteran children’s author, Avi. The series skips the whimsy and fantasy you’ll find in other popular novels for young readers, and places fictional characters in the middle of nonfictional, historical events. The first book, Iron Thunder, recounts the battle between the ships Merrimac and Monitor during the Civil War, from the point of view of a 13-year-old Union sailor. Genuine photographs, maps, blueprints and letters are reprinted with the text to supplement each story. Future books in the I Witness series include the Colorado Gold Rush of 1859 and the American Revolution, showing your tween grandchild just how epic nonfiction adventures can be.
