Carly & Lucy Simon: Sing Songs For Children

Yes, that Carly Simon. Before she made her name singing "You're So Vain," she and her sister Lucy had recorded two kids' albums. Long out of print but re-released on December 2, this 11-song collection sounds much like the 1960s psych-folk you may have listened to in high school, in the back of a van or in a shag-carpeted family room. In terms of song arrangements, instrumentation, and wealth of imagination, there’s a heavy Peter, Paul & Mary vibe here. Animal friendships form on "The Owl and the Pussycat," lobsters have a hard time dancing on "The Lobster Quadrille," and "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," tells a dreamy tale of three fishermen's chance encounter with the stars. This album feels very much like a product of its time; the bells and whistles are scant but albums like this paved the way for the minimalist style of kids' music that's so popular now. And after long days of running around with your grandchildren, the Simon sisters' soothing voices are perfect for downtime.

Beethoven’s Wig 4: Dance Along Symphonies

The Beethoven's Wig series has a novel approach to teaching kids classical music: It takes the works of classical composers, pairs them with funny lyrics, and voila, a new and energized spin on old symphonies emerges. Bach, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Strauss Jr. are represented with somewhat cartoonish voices that sing songs like "Rover Roll Over," which is set to the "Amnen Polka," and tells the frustrating tale of teaching a dog new tricks. "Beep Beep Beep" takes the story of a traffic jam, and merges it with Beethoven’s "Moonlight Sonata." The enjoyably zany lyrics about midnight snacks and wacky waltzes, offer grandchildren a friendly foray into classical music on the first part of the album. The second half of the album features the original compositions, sans lyrics — so these classics can also be heard in their original form. There are also educational activities included within the CD booklet-suggestions on how to extend the works outside of just listening.

Brian Vogan: Little Songs

With its exquisite production quality and catchy pop hooks throughout, you wouldn't think Little Songs is music educator Brian Vogan's very first, self-released album. Some elements might be a little too sophisticated for the content; for example, the rock-and-roll-driven "Firefighter" features squealing guitar solos that are slightly abrasive for the youngest ears, but overall, it's his piano that creates the bouncing melodies. Vogan also succeeds with his subtle prescriptions on how to interact with the world; "Say Hello" articulates the path to overcoming one’s shyness, and "Happy Valentine's Day" outlines the tenets of February 14. There are other informative tunes like the opener "That’s How a Pumpkin Grows," which specifically narrates the growth process of everyone’s favorite fall vegetable, without any metaphors. Little Songs offers a good mix for a wide range of young grandchildren with different vocabulary levels, and like any good educator does, Vogan makes learning new things a ton of fun.
