Kids' Music Roundup: Rock and Folk for Tots

Best new music for toddler grandchildren

Our reviews

The Sippy Cups:One Day Soon

The Sippy Cups are a Bay Area pop band that brings a bit of classic rock sophistication to children’s music. While retaining a fun, head-bobbing piano-pop feel, the group conjures a Magical Mystery Tour nostalgia: a mellow but kooky feel. In anticipation of its new album this winter, the band released a five-song EP (available at the iTunes store only), entitled One Day Soon. "Day After Halloween" captures that "woe-is-me" feeling kids get when coming off a sugar high on November 1, and "Ladybug Beat" is a fun tale about a band of bugs learning how to jam. Don’t let the toddler-gear name fool you — the band is easily for the older than 2 crowd.

The Jimmies: Make Your Own Someday

So, you’re tired of the Jonas Brothers. We hear ya, but what if those little rockers in your life just can't get enough guitar-pop? New York City’s The Jimmies are a rock-infused, sing-along band that has created a soundtrack for those formidable growing-up years. "Bedhead" is a funny ode to that "weird hairdo" kids always wake up with. And as far as musical style, The Jimmies aren’t just a one-trick pony. You’ll find hints of Spanish arrangements, funk, and even a spunky-sounding Dixieland twang in "Punxsutawney Phil." Overall, the lyrics are fun and The Jimmies sneak in enough variety to provide that well-roundedness lacking in most children's music.

Kimya Dawson: Alphabutt

If you saw Juno, last year’s little-film-that-could, you can credit new mom Kimya Dawson with writing the folk ditties you heard throughout the film. Like the movie's main character, motherhood has also been a fruitful time for Dawson; Alphabutt has 15, quick but punchy, folk songs about baby monsters, bears, and some dude named Uncle Hukee. The songs here aren’t as structured as traditional folk songs or traditional kid's music, but often take on a nursery-rhyme style with lots of repetition, just the way the 4 and younger set like it.
