Best Ride-Ons for Toddlers and Preschoolers

For pushing, scooting, or pedaling, these are some of the coolest carts for little riders

by Phoebe Assenza

Our Review

Before your grandchildren are ready for a big kid's bike, The Skuut Balance Bike teaches the same balance and coordination necessary for a two-wheeler, only without pedals or training wheels. Its design is similar to the enormously popular (and more expensive) Like-A-Bike: Grandchildren put the bike in motion by pushing along with their feet, and once they are comfortable enough, they lift their feet and use their balance to enjoy their first rides.

Price: $82
For ages: 2 to 5
Available at: Amazon.com

Scooting around the house in her first ride-on car is a thrill for any toddler, but the Up and Down Roller Coaster from Step 2 takes the action to great new heights with indoor, amusement park-style tracks. The cart starts at the top and wheels down the undulating sections, giving your grandchild the same kind of rush as a playground slide, or better.

Price: $120
For ages: 2 to 5
Available at: Amazon.com

Of all ride-on toys, the Cozy Coupe II is probably the most classic. Its body shape has been slightly tweaked over the years, and the newest models have updates like a play-key ignition and storage in the trunk, but the foot-powered fun is the same as always. It's the perfect driveway and sidewalk companion for the littlest cruisers.

Price: $50
For ages: 18 months to 5 years
Available at: Amazon.com

For walks around the neighborhood or for circling the driveway, the Happy Navigator Tricycle is a well-designed ride-on that teaches pedaling and steering to the youngest riders. It's low to the ground, so grandchildren don't have to do any balancing. When your grandchild is pooped from pedaling (or whenever its time for you tto take the steering wheel) you can lock the handlebars and use its extended push-rod.

Price: $190
For ages: 18 months to 4 years
Available at: Amazon.com

Your grandchildren can push the Step Start Walk N' Ride well before they're ready to ride; it converts into a sturdy ride-on when they are ready. The dual-use vehicle grows along with developing toddlers, and it also has an engaging play center with clickable dials, levers, and a toy-antenna to keep them extra busy.

Price: $23
For ages: nine months to 3 years
Available at: Amazon.com
