Perfect places to pamper the parents-to-be

by Beth D'Addono

Thinking of sending your kids on a babymoon? A great way for the expectant parents to spend some alone time together before the baby comes, these special packages tout romance for Valentine’s Day and all year long. Here’s a line-up of some of the best babymoons from coast to coast. The romance factor applies whether you’re pregnant or not, so you might just want to do some of the research yourself.

La Residence, Napa Valley, Calif.

Head to this oasis of tranquility in the heart of Napa Valley for two days of VIP pampering in one of their 25 guest rooms before those midnight feedings begin. The Baby on Board package offers two nights in a king suite (with plenty of pillows to make the expectant mom comfortable), a welcome basket of fruit and snacks, a prenatal massage and organic facial for her and a deep tissue massage for him. The couple takes home two Frette robes and a commemorative bottle of wine to enjoy after baby arrives. Cost: $1,775. (Note: Prices subject to change, so check ahead.)

Rocky Mountain Lodge & Cabins, Cascade, Colo.

An ideal mountain retreat, this rustic, elegantly-furnished log lodge is located near Colorado Springs. Parents-to-be arrive to a bouquet of roses, a bottle of sparkling cider, chocolate truffles or strawberries, and a fruit and cheese platter. They’ll be pampered for two nights with breakfast each morning, two one-hour massages, a romantic six-course dinner at one of the area’s top restaurants, and a signature photo frame and two champagne flutes to take home. Cost: Starts at $600.

Inn at Harbor Hill Marina, Niantic, Conn.

This charming waterfront inn is only a short drive from Mystic, with its historic seaport and aquarium. You can see the water from each of the Inn’s nine rooms. The Babymoon Escape includes two nights accommodations, a $50 dining gift certificate, “Romancing the Sax” CD, a bottle of sparkling cider and chocolates, the breakfast buffet and discount coupons to nearby shopping outlets. Cost: Starts at $395.

Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, Fla.

Located on a barrier island at the northeastern corner of Florida, this 444-room, five diamond Ritz-Carlton oozes luxury. Couples will enjoy two nights in either an oceanfront suite or coastal view room with extra pillows for back and tummy support, and take home a Bulgari bath set for the baby. At the Ritz-Carlton the expectant parents can indulge in couples massage (prenatal for her, sports for him), a three-course dinner served in room or on the balcony, and one item from the pregnancy craving menu. Cost: Starts at $1,299.

High Pointe Inn, West Barnstable, Mass.

Named Best Bed & Breakfast, Mid-Cape by the readers of Cape Cod Life Magazine in 2007, the High Pointe Inn boasts fireplaces, a beautiful garden and views of the dunes of Sandy Neck. The babymoon package includes two nights, full breakfast, a three-course dinner for two and a one-hour couples’ massage. Cost: $600 to $650.

Mandarin Oriental, New York, N.Y.

Located on the top of the Time Warner Center at the southwest tip of Central Park, this glam hotel is steps away from the Big Apple’s many attractions. Kick off with a sparkling cider and chocolate-dipped strawberries welcome gift. Enjoy a gift basket of maternity lotions and potions, two hours of spa treatments for mother and father-to-be, breakfast for two (and a half) and a room with a view of Manhattan to die for. Cost: Starts at $2,545 a night.

Hotel Providence, Providence, R.I.

Located in the heart of Providence’s downtown Arts and Entertainment District, the four diamond Hotel Providence offers couples easy access to dining, theaters and museums. The Baby Steps package includes one overnight in a king guestroom, the book, “What to Expect the First Year,” a package of diapers, a gift for baby, and a year’s subscription to Parenting Magazine. Best of all, the parents-to-be will receive a gift certificate for an overnight stay after baby arrives, when a good night’s sleep will be a welcome treat. Cost: $524 a night.

Planters Inn, Charleston, S.C.

The 1844 Planters Inn — a luxury Relais & Chateaux located in downtown Charleston — combines the charm of Southern hospitality with 21st century amenities in its 64 rooms. The Baby’s on the Way package offers three nights’ accommodations and breakfast with a slew of extras. These include a jar of pickles for the mother-to-be, a cigar and cognac for the future father, and a teddy bear for baby. The couple also gets movies for in-room viewing, massages, facials, and a guided tour of the city’s historic district. Cost: Starts at $2,160 for three nights.

The Founders Inn & Spa, Virginia Beach, Va.

From its elegant Georgian architecture to its landscaped English gardens, this 240-room, Colonial-style resort offers an indulgent getaway close to the beach, Norfolk and historic Williamsburg. Expectant parents are treated to chocolate-covered strawberries and sparkling cider welcome, deluxe overnight accommodations, couples massage and dinner in the Swan Terrace. Even baby gets a gift: a Lullaby Themes for Sleepy Dreams CD. Cost: Starts at $399 a night.

Rosario Resort & Spa, Eastsound, Wash.

Located in a historic seaside mansion on beautiful Orcas Island in Washington State’s San Juan Islands, Rosario Resort offers a relaxing getaway for expecting couples, or couples with babies. Enjoy a two-night stay, massages, a bottle of sparking cider and homemade cookies, breakfast for two and a baby gift from the Bay Boutique. Cost: Starts at $459.
