Your grandchildren may not know more of the Reverend Martin Luther King than his famous I Have a Dream speech, and there’s no better way to expand on that notable moment than to visit the The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. The site includes several structures: Dr. King’s birth home and gravesite, Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church (where he was pastor), and the King Center, all of which show many of Dr. King’s personal effects as well as media and video that put his struggle for equality in context. The tours are mostly self-guided, but tours of the Birth Home usually fill up before noon and require registration at the National Park Service Visitor Center across from the King Center. (You may wish to sign up for a tour first and then visit the other sites until your tour time.) The surrounding Sweet Auburn historic district is intertwined with Dr. King’s history and well worth a tour.
