A must-see for all kids who are familiar with the story of the Pilgrims, a visit to the rock and plantation still make for a super-interesting day for those unfamiliar. But remember, Plymouth Rock is not for grandkids to climb upon! After your grandchildren have fully absorbed the rock and all its greatness, hop over to nearby Plimoth Plantation (it's about three miles away) and the Mayflower II, a fastidious re-creation of the original 17th-century vessel. Tour the cramped passengers' quarters with your grandkids and develop their appreciation of modern travel (even if it's coach). Listen to tour guides, and see if you run into actors aboard in period clothes. Spend the rest of the day touring the 1627 English Village, modeled after a typical farming town from the period, and learn about the area's Native American Wampanoag people in their home site.
