For a look at what Detroit was like in the middle of the 19th century — or to sit in a car that you have to crank to start — visit the Detroit Historical Museum. The museum has quite a few grandkid-sized displays, including the room with the O-scale Glancy Trains Collection and the Streets of Old Detroit; a life-sized walk through exhibit of the kinds of businesses and shops people had in the last couple hundred years decorated with period antiques. The partial assembly line will also appeal to budding gearheads.
