Likely to be the pinnacle of the trip for your grandchildren, the La Brea Tar Pits astounds with a mix of natural history and interactive exhibits. The tar pits themselves are out front with a somewhat macabre sculpture of mammoths drowning in the still-bubbling tar (where the bones used in the recreations inside are excavated from). Animatronic dinosaurs, well-designed displays, and an open-air courtyard inside the building add to the museum’s already considerable charms.
