Uptown's Chain of Lakes is a popular destination, and the two largest — Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun — deserve their own entries for all the great resources they offer. At Lake Harriet, sniff red, yellow, and pink roses in the large rose garden, wander through the Japanese-style "Peace Garden," take a short walk through the woods, picnic on the grassy hills, travel around the pedestrian and bike paths circling the lake's three mile circumference, see free family concerts at the bandshell June to September, swim at the beach, or play at the tot lot — you get the idea. On the frozen lake in the winter, people still get out there and fly kites, cross-country ski, and ice fish.
