If you happen to be in New Orleans between January 6 and Ash Wednesday, be sure to pick up a King Cake with your grandchildren. Though the tradition of the cake — which is essentially a frosted Danish — dates back to the Middle Ages, it began as a Christmas ritual. Today, in New Orleans at least, the cake is iced in Mardi Gras colors (purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power) and a tiny plastic baby is baked into the cake. He who gets the slice with the baby is deemed king — or host — of the next Mardi Gras party. Perhaps for your purposes you can have the grandchild with the plastic baby get a crown for the day. Haydel’s Bakery ships cakes year-round, though it’s more fun to go get one in person.
