Located in the heart of Little Italy, the San Diego Firehouse Museum, housed in an authentic 1915 firehouse, is a gem of a place. You and your grandchildren will delight in seeing the antique fire engines and equipment that date as far back as the 1800s. The friendly volunteer staff (made up of firefighters, medical technicians and hopeful new recruits) is here to answer questions and talk story about San Diego’s firefighting history. Indeed, firefighting plays a crucial role in the city’s survival since its dry climate lends itself to brushfires, some of which have caused major, local devastation. There is also a 9/11 tribute, featuring memorabilia that local firefighters who worked at the World Trade Center sites brought back with them. A gift shop can be your final stop on the way out. Here, you can pick up a T-shirt or toy badge so you can bring a little of the brotherhood home with you.
