Indeed you and your grandchildren could spend a whole week in Coronado and never be at a loss for things to do. This peninsula that still calls itself an island is a resort town sandwiched between the two military hubs of North Island and the Naval Amphibious Base. It is located across the bay from Downtown San Diego and can be accessed by car or passenger ferry. The world-famous Hotel Del Coronado is a must-see, even if you just amble through the shops, grab an ice cream from Mootime and marvel at all the history making (Thomas Edison installed the lighting) that has taken place at this breathtaking Victorian-style landmark built in 1888. Frank L. Baum was allegedly inspired by the Del’s stunning architecture when he dreamed up the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz (he penned the novel mere blocks away). Such allure has made this place the resort of kings, queens, presidents and movie stars. There’s so much lore that goes along with this National Historic Landmark (don’t forget about the resident ghost or that the hotel served as the filming location for Some Like it Hot with Marilyn Monroe) that it’s hard to step away.
