Make an historical visit to the very first of the famous California missions, Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala. This National Historic Landmark, founded in 1769, was the first church ever built in California. Father Junipero Serra oversaw its construction having it built to the specifications of an army fort after local American Indians rioted and burned the first structure to the ground in 1775. This is a great place to take your grandchildren to learn more about California’s rich history and gain an understanding of how Catholicism came to the West.
