The Smithsonian's National Zoo is a wonderful place to discover unusual creatures and is one of the most child-friendly places to visit in Washington, D.C. This 163-acre zoological park is home to more than 2,000 animals of 400 different species. Favorites include lions, tigers, giraffes, and elephants, and of course visitors come from all over the country just to see the giant pandas, Tian Tian, Mei Xiang, and Tai Shan. Daily programs are offered including animal training, feeding demonstrations, and keeper talks. Plan ahead and take your grandchildren to special activities that are scheduled throughout the year. Sunset Serenade concerts are held on Thursday evenings during the summer months. During the fall, Boo at the Zoo is a fun Halloween event for children.
