If your grandchild is contemplating a future career in firefighting, the best place to indulge their interests is the Friendship House in historic Alexandria. Originally established in 1774, The Friendship Fire Company was the first volunteer fire company in the region. Today, the museum features historic fire engines and plenty of artifacts representing the technological developments in firefighting, (where else can you see an old leather water bucket?) There are also plenty of ceremonial objects such as old parade uniforms, capes, and banners. Ringing the old firehouse bell is always a special thrill.
