Any Animal Lovers Out There?

Would like to know if there are any animal lovers out there that would like to share their stories with their pets and your grandchildren. I have a bunch of them that are hysterical. I really think it is important that children and animals be introduced properly and how we can teach our little ones to respect other living creatures. There are so many pets that have been turned into shelters because of adults that didn't do their homework before bringing a pet into the home. Children and animals have a special bond and the animals can teach them unconditional love. Would love to hear from all of you.

I have a 2 1/2 granddaughter. She's so funny at times. When we go to the store there's a section where the fish is. She loves to watch the fish. So one day I decided to let her pick out a goldfish.Because you have to have the water and everything prepared before the big arrival I had it ready.
So with great pride she carried her new pet all the way home.
We placed it in the "fish bowl" and all was well."UNTIL" she looked at me and said."Granny we forgot his mommy and daddy".
So I told her her mommy and daddy needs to buy a bigger home.

veryblessed; What a dear story. My twin granddaughter are 8 months. I plan on getting an aquarium and let them choose their own fish for it when they get old enough to care for them. I loved fish when I was little. Is she your only grandchild? Kathie/magmar

We are all animal lovers in our family , we have a dog, and both our kids do too. It's halarious to get all 3 together , our DD's dog and our dog 'play" while our son's dog ( a small dachshund) just stands there & barks the entire time, he's afraid to get in the mess so just barks . .. you'd think we were in a ZOO!!!! Our granddaughter, , when she started walking, started trying to 'ride' our dog, so we'd hold onto her while Sophia ,all 80 lbs. of her , would mosey along like a small pony. She loves it, and Sophia loves the attention. Also - and i speak for all of us, whenever anyone is sick, our dogs are right there next to us 'protecting' us, i guess, never leaving our sides. . . they can sense something isnt' right. They are family. You can't let anyone bother our GD either , their dog snarls and barks at you if he thinks you're hurting Sami.
We are contributors to the Humane Society , our local animal shelter , and Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah - long before it became known that that was the sanctuary all Michael Vick's dogs were taken to , to be rescued from his horrible dog fight events, cared for , and rehabilitated into family pets . . the story about those dogs is heart warming btw and almost all have been placed in loving homes. --- Yes, we are animal lovers!!!!

How precious gramma of8: Out of the mouths of babes. I love the names she chose. Do they have any pets at home? I just couldn't imagine life without a little furry thing looking up at you with big loving brown eyes, or tails that wag soooo fast, you wonder what keeps it attached. That unconditional love is so special. I remember as a kid we had an Irish Setter approriately named Shamrock (original, huh?). Anytime I was feeling lonely, had a fight with my parents, friends, etc., Shamrock knew. She would come to me and give me a big "puppy kiss" and curl up next to me in bed. During my teens she was my kleenex for the tears I shed over the stupid boys. She was always there with that unconditional love and always calmed my fears.

magmar, no she doesn't have any pets ight now she lives with her mom and 2 yr.l dbrother and sister in an apartment, when they lived with my son they lived on a farm and she had a yellow lab dog, when they moved off the farm I was suppose to find a home for it, needless to say I still have it! so she gets to see "Molly" when ever she comes to grandmas! grammaof8

I am a dog lover all the way. I have been feeling the real urge to find a small dog that I could share with my granddaughters. Myhusband is NOT on board with my desire, though.

One of the girls has two very large dogs in her home. They are taller than she is, and without any siblings, she considers the dogs her brother and sister. She is definitely top dog in that pack! They protect her and love to have her lay on top of them as they lay on the floor. They are quite the picture. Our son and DIL did find out, though, that our granddaughter is allergic to dog saliva. It was quite the chore for them to train the dogs not to give her any "kisses." Our granddaughter, too, had to be taught to quickly wash her hands after playing with the dogs in case she encountered any saliva. She has had to go to the ER twice after having a severe reaction to it. It would be terrible for her to have to give up her best friends, so we're praying she outgrows it.

The other girls had two cats. One of them was a really sweet old girl (about 15 years). They had to have her put down about a year ago because she developed cancer and was in a lot of pain. The other cat was huge - so fat it's belly dragged on the ground. It was constantly on a special diet, but never lost any weight. She was also extremely antisocial, not even coming out from under our son and daughter-in-laws bed for the rest of the family - only when she wanted to eat. In fact, the girls mourned deeply for the first cat when she died, but told me that they hoped the second cat would die because they really wanted a puppy, and mommy said there would be no more pets while Q-tip was still around. They eventually had to have that cat put to sleep because she became completely incontinent and couldn't even make it to her litter box. Yuck!! Anyway, they are now pet-less (although they have about three aquariums). Until they see whether our newly adopted granddaughter is afraid of animals, due to her abuse, they don't want to bring an animal into the house only to need to give it away again.

@ mrsrev; I have had pups since I was 4 years old. I don't know if you read the Patty Duke story that was on GP.com in May. It was a discussion about competition with the other GM. She had a cute quip that she came up with. Instead of competing she was the GM with the dogs. I found that very funny. I, personally love the fact that when the girls come over they will come running in to see Maggie (Mag) and Marley (Mar)my two cocker spaniels. They are such happy little dogs and love children and people in general. They are also nursing home and children hospital therapy dogs and in the fall and winter months we do agility trials. They live for that. I do enjoy my life with animals. Come One and Come All to the ANIMAL LOVER's Group and tell your funny stories. When you put children and pets together, it has to be a great calamity. Magmar

Magmar/Kathie,

Sweet lady , you know I love animals and all their antics, oh the stories I could tell and how I had to make Tapicoa Pudding for Toodles
a Peekapoo and he would jump up into the dining room a raised part of the home and eat it quickly and then onto the couch for more out of our bowls... such a little piggie..

You know I have always loved animals and I am a "ANIMAL SUPPORTER" for they are my babies just like my grandchildren.
I suffer with depression from a childhood illness that lead to brain surgery and I will say for certain that it does help to have a pet. I have a cat due to being in a apartment and he is the first thing my grandchildren look for when they come here. I collect medication bottles and towels for the Humane Society to help out. They clean the bottles and re-use them for the animals medications.

Hi garinggrandma; WELCOME to the site. I am so happy to heve you here. Animal lovers are special people. I have always felt, that people that can love an animal has a very special place in their hearts for all living beings. I am fortunate enought to have landlords that are also animal lovers. I have two cocker spaniels (brother and sister) and 4 cats. I am single and love going home from work every night and seeing my "welcoming committee". Unconditional love is so uplifting to me. I am also currently fostering 3 little kittens (polydactyls - they are also called Hemingway cats) they have 6 toes and cute as a button. They were found last weekend in a state park here in PA without the Mom. They are probably 5-6 weeks old. They were probably dropped off. I HATE people that do that. Well, I have had them for just about one week now and I cuddle with them and for the first time this morning the one I call Miss Polly Dactyl. jumped up on my shoulder and began kissing my neck (it really tickled) and then gave me the most special gift of all in the cat kingdom A HEAD BUT and then she looked right at me and gave me the cutest "meow". I'm hooked. Please tell us stories about your cat. Again, welcome Kathie/magmar
