Sometimes a grandparent will wait until a big event like Christmas or birthday to give a splashy gift. My thought is that children sometimes remember the time you did something special with them, like going to a ballgame, baking cookies, or going to a movie with them. I try to do something special or acknowledge their uniqueness in each child. With 13 grandkids, buying gifts has become somewhat expensive for me, since many of them live in different places. What I try to do is bake cookies for each family, or bring one or two grandchildren over to help me and we have fun together. I think they learn that you don't have to have money to show your love.
