Grandparents of the Week: Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward
by Kristen Sturt on Jan 27, 2012 | 12:00 PM

"The Long, Hot Summer" (UA 1958)
"I have steak at home. Why go out for hamburger?"– Paul Newman, on his wife, Joanne Woodward

In a world where the average Hollywood marriage barely lasts through the honeymoon, the 50-year union of actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward was a rare treasure. Lifelong supporters of each other’s work, the famously devoted couple collaborated on multiple films together, including 1990’s Mr. and Mrs. Bridge and Empire Falls in 2005. But the partnership didn’t end with acting – Woodward and Newman had three children and two grandchildren together, and were ardent supporters of several charities. The biggest, the Newman’s Own Foundation, was founded by Paul himself in 1982, and has since raised over $300 million for those in need.

Though Woodward has kept a relatively low public profile since Newman’s death in 2008, she’s remained active in the couple’s various philanthropies, including the Foundation and the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang Camp, which gives seriously ill kids the chance to get away, at no cost to their families. Her husband would have been 87 yesterday. And that’s why…

Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman are Grandparents.com’s Grandparents of the Week!

A Grandma's Dilemma: Shopping for a "Tomboy"
by Gary Drevitch on Jan 25, 2012 | 01:45 PM

A grandmother loves nothing more than shopping for her young granddaughter and lavishing lovely pink dresses on the girl. There's just one problem: The young tomboy refuses to give those frilly things even a glance. We posed this real-life dilemma to our Facebook friends recently and they had a lot of advice for this concerned grandma (and her daughter and granddaughter).

So, should grandma buy only what the girl wants? Or should the girl wear the dresses when grandma visits to show her respect and appreciation? See the full article now and join the debate »

How's Your Bone Density?
by Deborah Long on Jan 25, 2012 | 10:15 AM

Here's a crushing statistic: Fully half of American women will break a bone after they turn 50. And if that broken bone should happen to be a hip bone, there's a 20 percent chance she will die within a year. Even for those who survive such breaks, infection is a real danger, and pain and disability may linger. That's the bad news. The good news is that regular bone density scans can assess a patient's risk, and Medicare provides access to them every two years. If a scan reveals that a woman is at risk, her doctor can intercede with medication or lifestyle guidelines that can help her avoid a painful break. Best of all, the technique is completely non-invasive.

3 Hidden Stresses of Grandparenting
by Gary Drevitch on Jan 24, 2012 | 02:15 PM

On Grandparents.com today: From our new book, The Modern Grandparent's Handbook, by Dr. Georgia Witkin, this excerpt from the chapter, "Hidden Grandparenting Stresses." Can you relate?:

I had a phone call from a friend recently who said she thought there was something very wrong with her mental health. She said that within the past year all her dreams had come true — her daughter married, moved to the suburbs, became pregnant, and made her a grandmother of a beautiful, healthy baby, while she herself had switched to a different campus at the university where she worked, in order to be closer to her new grandchild. But she was crying at the drop of a hat. Why, she asked me, was she so upset when she was so thrilled about all the changes?

I had heard similar stories before. The answer is that change, any change, even good change like becoming a grandparent, can be stressful because it requires adaptation, and adaptation triggers the brain and body's stress reaction ...
