We've Joined Fran Drescher in the Fight Against Cancer
by on Sep 07, 2010 | 02:30 PM

Grandparents.com is proud to announce a partnership with Fran Drescher's Cancer Schmancer, an organization dedicated to helping women fight cancer. Following is a welcome letter to our community from Fran:

Hiya, dolls!

You may know me as "The Nanny," but what you may not know is that I'm a uterine cancer survivor who took two years and eight doctors before finally being properly diagnosed. I was lucky that I was still in Stage 1, and that I'm alive today, but I got to thinking: We need to wake up! We don't know enough about our risk factors, our family histories, or the questions we should be asking our physicians. Of course we want and need a cure for cancer. And God willing, it will come! But what can we do now? ...

Spotted: Choose Your Own Adventure Makes a Comeback
by Gary Drevitch on Sep 07, 2010 | 02:00 PM

Did your children thrill to the sci-fi and espionage books in the Choose Your Own Adventure series that was a best-seller in the 1980s? Kids would read a few pages, then be asked to choose what they, as the hero, would do next. Their choice might lead to a page where they rescued a crewmate, faced a new villain, or got themselves killed. But then they could start again and forge an alternate path through the book.

Now Edward Packer, one of the creators of the series, is back with a new set of tales, called U-Ventures, for a new generation of kids. But these stories are digital, meant to be read on a smart phone. And that's not the only place that the choose-your-own-adventure format can be found today — American Girl is now publishing books following the blueprint as well.
