9 Incredible Delivery-Room Stories
by Gary Drevitch on Sep 04, 2010 | 12:30 PM

Every grandparent wants to be there to see, hear, and touch the new arrival as soon as possible. But some don't have to wait — invited into the sanctum of the delivery room, or standing right outside the door, they're there from the start. Can Preschoolers Be Depressed?
by Gary Drevitch on Sep 02, 2010 | 02:30 PM

In her New York Times magazine cover story this week, Pamela Paul tries to get an answer to this sensitive question. She writes:

Is it really possible to diagnose such a grown-up affliction in such a young child? And is diagnosing clinical depression in a preschooler a good idea, or are children that young too immature, too changeable, too temperamental to be laden with such a momentous label? ... Just how early can depression begin? ... Today a number of child psychiatrists and developmental psychologists say depression can surface in children as young as 2 or 3.

The article also notes that grandparents tend to be more skeptical of these diagnoses than parents. What do you think? Can kids that young be correctly diagnosed as depressed? If so, how should they be treated? Share your thoughts in the Comments area.
