Word of the Week: Bootleg (It's not what you think)
by Nancy Mattia Posted: Oct 25, 2007
BOOTLEG: You’re thinking, “Oh, I already know that one — it means illegal goods, like that unauthorized Beatles record I got in 1969." Sorry, Grandma, but the word, which originated in the hip-hop universe, doesn’t refer to your old Twist and Shout or even a pirated copy of the latest “Spiderman” DVD. Today, a person can be bootleg, or phony, as in, “Marie is so bootleg — she’ll pretend she’s your friend and then talk behind your back.”
