Paper-Decorated Vase

Decorate a vase and fill it with beautiful blooms.

By Design Team

This is a lovely idea if you are getting flowers for the mother of your grandchildren. Help the kids decorate the vase and fill it with your beautiful blooms.

  • Vase (If you don’t have an extra vase, a tin can or any old container will work)
  • Assorted construction paper
  • Button
  • Elmer’s all-purpose glue
  • Scissors
  • Tape

  1. Cut 1/2-inch-wide strips lengthwise from construction paper. Use the entire sheet.
  2. Take one strip of paper and place it on the vase to measure the correct length. Fold at least one inch of paper over the lip of the vase. Repeat at the bottom of the vase. Cut away excess paper. Do the same with the other strips, spacing them on the vase to your preference.
  3. [photo instructions max-width=150 align=right]Dot glue on the strips of paper and attach to vase. Repeat until vase is covered in a stripe pattern. Make sure the strips of paper overlap on the bottom of the vase.
  4. Trace the bottom of the vase on a piece of different colored construction paper. Cut it out and paste on the bottom to keep the strips from coming off.
  5. Cut out a 1/2-inch strip of construction paper and wrap it around the neck of the vase.
  6. Using another color for the bow, cut out two more half-strips of paper, lengthwise.
  7. Take one of the half-strips of paper and lay it flat on the table. Place your left index finger 1 1/2 inches from the edge closest to you. Pick up the far end of the paper and fold a loop back over your finger. Gently extricate your index finger and place it on top of the paper again. Repeat until you run out of paper. Each successive fold should not go as far back as the previous loop, so you can create the staggered series of ruffles shown.
  8. Repeat the above step with the second strip of paper to make the other side of the bow. Glue the two parts of the bow together. Glue the button in the middle.
  9. Glue bow to neck of the vase. Display finished vase prominently on shelf or as a centerpiece.
