Speaking of involvement, if you're the regular caregiver/babysitter of choice for your grandchildren, please come and talk with us at Grandparents Caring for Grandkids. Same if you're raising or helping to raise your grands. I invite those of you who frequently take care of or are raising other relative children to come and join in, as well. And former and soon-to-be such caregivers, too. (All others are welcome, as well, but the focus is on GP/relative caregiving situations.)

To find us, just click on Community at the very top or bottom of this page and scroll down the Index till about the middle. Or key this link into the top of your screen http://community.grandparents.com/index.php/forum/15-grandparents-caring-for-grandkids

In my opinion, we grandparents have a lot to offer our grandchildren, in most cases, just by our example. If we go so far as to actively teach them certain values, I think we have to be careful not to conflict with what their parents are teaching them. And while many of the volunteer activities mentioned in the article are wonderful, I think it goes almost without saying that we need to check with the parents first, even if only to make sure it doesn't conflict with activities that they have planned (unless, of course, they're custodial).

Granted, those grandparents who are more closely involved in their grandchild's lives probably have more opportunity to have this kind of influence. But, in my opinion, it's true, to some extent for other grandparents, too.

One of the things that I'm sure I want to teach is kindness, gentleness. It seems to me to be a platform on which to build these 6 virtues. I suspect that it begins with me being kind and gentle with myself.
