Specialty running stores are the way to go, says Dr. Zinkin. Stores like Fleet Feet, Runner's Edge, Runner's Depot, and Sports Authority will have knowledgeable salespeople who will ask the right questions, analyze your gait on a treadmill, and fit you for the right shoe.
"Walking shoes you might find in a non-athletic store are often not your best bet," says Dr. Zinkin. "You'll always get a properly fit, appropriate shoe, if you get it from a sports-oriented store with knowledgeable staff. That's much much more important than the brand name."
